Abstract:

Background: Precise and quick diagnosis of AMI is of main medical and pecuniary concerns. Objectives: The aim of this study was to detect saliva total aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity-as an available guideline-in patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods: A case-control study was performed in 31 subjects as the control group and 31 ones as the AMI group. Saliva and serum total AST activities were measured in the first and second mornings following the AMI by IFCC method. Mann-Whitney U and Spearman rho tests were performed as statistical analyses. Results: AST activities in both serum and saliva in the resting and stimulated conditions were significantly greater in the AMI than the healthy controls (P < 0. 05). Furthermore, serum AST showed a significant partial correlation with resting saliva AST in both first and second mornings following the AMI (rho = 0. 368, P =0. 017 and rho = 0. 352, P = 0. 024, respectively) and also with stimulated saliva AST (rho = 0. 331, P = 0. 034, rho = 0. 443, P = 0. 003, respectively). Conclusions: It presumes that saliva AST may be used as a biomarker in the patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction.

Abstract:

Liver is an important organ with major role in carbohydrates, proteins and lipids metabolism. In addition, secretion and excretion of toxic materials occur in this organ. Exposure to a variety of infectious agents such as parasitic, viral, bacterial or toxic materials may lead to liver damage. Today, one of the best way for investigation and diagnosis of liver damage is measurement of some liver enzyme such as alanine aminotransferase (GPT or ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (GOT or AST). Since, these enzymes exist in other tissues, measurement of other specific enzyme is required. In this study activity of ornithine carbamyl transferase (OCT), the second enzyme in urea cycle, in 56 patients with liver problem (cirrhosis and viral hepatitis) was determined. SGPT, SGOT, Alb, Bil, مGT and ALP tests were performed. To assess the health and unhealthy liver in both control and sample groups. Our data shows a correlation between activity of OCT with SGOT (r=0.782, p<0.001) and with SGPT (r=0.857, p<0.001). Since OCT enzyme is specific for liver, further investigation of activity of this enzyme in assessment of other liver problems is required.

Abstract:

Background: Currently, diabetes is one of the most common diseases that has a devastating effect on the body and causes free radicals in the body. One of the most important organs in the body that metabolizes and analyzes hormones and various substances is the liver (the largest gland of the body. Therefore, in order to cope with the damaging effects of diabetes and its effect on some liver enzymes, strong antioxidants have been needed. In this study, we tried to assess the effects of harmaline on albumin and some liver enzymes. Materials and Methods: In this study, 35 male vistar rats with a weight range of 180-200 g were divided into five groups of seven in control group (that received citrate buffer as they became diabetic) and case group (diabetic with intraperitoneal injection of 55 mg/kg streptozotocin), experimental group 1 (diabetic and subcutaneously receiving 10 mg/kg harmaline), experimental group 2 (diabetic and received subcutaneous dose of 15 mg/kg of harmaline), and experimental group 3 (diabetic and received 20 mg/kg of harmaline subcutaneously) and After two months of becoming diabetic, rats received subcutaneous medication of various doses of harmaline for two weeks. Then, anesthesia was achieved in rats with ketamine and zylazine, and blood sampling was conducted directly from the heart. After separating serum to measure glucose and insulin, samples were delivered to the laboratory. Results: In this study, a significant decrease was observed in the amount of albumin in the experimental groups compared with the control group and a significant increase was observed in the amount of aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase enzymes in experimental groups compared with the control group. In experimental diabetic groups, the amount of albumin has also shown no significant changes compared with the other diabetic groups. Conclusion: This study showed that taking harmaline caused a disturbance in the balance of liver enzymes and elevated serum albumin levels in healthy and diabetic rats. has changed the balance of liver enzymes and increased blood albumin in healthy rats, while liver enzymes increased in diabetic groups as dosage increased.

Abstract:

Background & Aim: Aspartate aminotransferase is present in gingivial Crevicular fluid, and there is preliminary evidence that its activity may correlate with the extent of gingival inflammation and tissue destruction.Method & Material: This work describes a study in which AST was monitored over a one year in 96 Patients with moderate adult periodontitis. Values for plaque index, gingival index and probing attachment level were recorded, and 30- second 3min samples of gingival fluid harvested. As partate aminotransferase activity was determined by a standar method. Results: Our results showed that Aspartate aminotransferase activity in control group was 432.75±26.82 and in patient group was 763.42±53.27 unit/mini ml of GCF. Aspartate aminotransferase activities of 500 units in min in ml of GCF or higher appeared to be associate with active disease. Aspartate aminotransferase activity in GCF is strongly related to human periodontal disease. Conclusions: Our results showed that Ast, as a direct measure of tissue damage, will prove to be useful odjunct in the diagnosis of active periodontitis and ultimately aid in the design of more effective therapy.

Abstract:

Background: A healthy diet provides the body with essential nutrition that includes fluids, macronutrients, micronutrients, and calories. The liver is one of the most important organs in the body that has the function of detoxification and cleansing, and smoking causes an additional burden for the detoxification function of the liver, which can lead to inflammation and fatty liver. This study was designed to investigate the effects of smoking on liver function. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study investigated the relationship between smoking and the type of nutrition of liver enzymes in healthy people and people who smoke in Zabol. In this study, 150 people were selected who were divided into two groups of healthy people without smoking (n = 75) and people with smoking with liver problems (n = 75). Results: There was no statistical relationship between age and levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) liver enzymes (P > 0. 05). However, a relationship was found between weight and levels of liver enzymes AST and ALT. Hepatitis also increased (P < 0. 05), and there was a statistical relationship between alcohol consumption with AST and ALT liver enzymes, more precisely, the more alcohol consumption, the higher the amount of liver enzymes (P < 0. 05). Finally, no statistically significant relationship was observed between fruit and vegetable consumption, rice consumption, meat consumption, and water consumption (P > 0. 05). Conclusion: This relationship is positive and direct,in other words, the higher the consumption of tobacco, the higher the activity of liver enzymes ALT and AST.

Background and Objectives: Diabetes disease can have destructive effects on different organs such as the liver. At this situation, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase increase in the blood. This study aimed to review the effect of aloe vera with swimming training on alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels of streptozotocin induced diabetic rats.Materials and Methods: 84 rats divided into seven groups; -week healthy control, fourth-week healthy control, first-week diabetic control, fourth-week diabetic control, Aloe Vera extract, swimming training, and swimming training with Aloe Vera extract. The training program included 30 minutes of swimming, three times per week, for 4 weeks. At the end, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels were measured by gathering blood samples from the heart. One-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests were used for statistical analysis of data (a=0.05).Results: The results showed that induction of diabetes significantly increases alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase (p=0.001) Also swimming training and Aloe Vera consumption for four weeks have significant effect on reduction of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase (p=0.001), whereas the four-week swimming training together with Aloe Vera consumption has more effect on the reduction of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase (p=0.001).Conclusion: It can be concluded that although swimming training and Aloe Vera consumption separately have lowering effect on alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, but swimming training together with Aloe Vera consumption has more effect on the reduction of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase.

Abstract:

Elevated enzyme activities in plasma may at times be attributed to the presence of macro-enzymes. The macro-enzymes are often serum enzymes in complex with immunoglobulins, resulting in a greater molecular mass that cannot be filtered by renal glomeruli and are, hence, retained in the plasma. The aspartate aminotransferase (AST) can exist as a macro-enzyme, although it has been rarely reported. We describe a pediatric patient with persistently elevated serum AST activity, due to macro-enzyme formation between AST and an immunoglobulin. This is to highlight the importance of early diagnosis of macro-AST in an otherwise asymptomatic pediatric patient with isolated AST-elevation and to avoid unnecessary costly testing.
